Like many adolescent boys, I longed to play the drums... Heading off to school, some of my friends from Paramus NJ would tell of their exploits in a band called...
Hmmm... Oh well, I forget the name... But the point is, I thought it was the coolest thing that they had a band and that my classmate Peter Keen was a drummer. Wow!
So I asked my folks if I could take drum lessons and then said...sure. We proceeded to Victors House Of Music in Ridgewood and I signed up for my drum lessons. They got me a set of drum sticks - and they hooked me up with a really cool practice pad... and I was off. Ha! I lost interest after about three lessons... and headed back to the basketball court.
You see, I couldn't make ANY noise with the practice pad... and mom and dad were simply not getting me a real drum kit. I had to wait until I was 45 years old and was remarried to a wonderful woman who started a band with me... before getting a real ... complete... RED... shiny... with chrome fittings... drum kit. It even had cymbals. I paid $750 for a brand made in Europe called Sonor.
|Well, since we had a practice studio in the house - and the real drummers who used it said it was a real good set, I felt some sort of satisfaction. About a year after purchasing the kit, I went so far as to purchase a beginners video tape. Something like Drum Basics 101... but I never looked at it. That is until one day recently... I sat down turned on the video and began to play along. After a few months I was ready to JAM with the band... Ha... it's been a very long journey... and I've taken a couple of additional lessons since playing the video.
What a trip...I even got to show off for mom and dad. And I never stop goofing on them about how they never bought me a kit when I was 14. It was probably the best thing they never did. Ha!
But look who's having the fun now...
